A New Chapter in Storytelling: The KinoSpring Vision
At KinoSpring, storytelling isn’t just the goal—it’s the heart of everything we do. During our recent reunion with students, collaborators, and enthusiasts in Le Havre, we shared the vision behind our motion capture studio and the journey that has brought us here. Though financial support is a welcome boon, our focus remains on bringing stories to life through 2D animation and now, through the evolving possibilities of motion capture. This meeting also marked an opportunity to introduce attendees to KinoSpring’s foundational shift: from our former association, La Berlue Productions, to our current, agile and forward-thinking studio.
Why Motion Capture Matters to 2D Animation
One of the key questions we addressed in the reunion was, “What can motion capture add to 2D animation?” The answer is clear and exciting: motion capture brings depth, precision, and lifelike fluidity to animated movements, even when only a few finger sensors are used. This new technology doesn’t replace traditional animation skills; it enhances them, giving animators and storytellers a powerful tool to make characters move and act naturally. In demonstrating how 2D animation can be infused with lifelike movement, attendees witnessed how motion capture technology allows for precise movements with minimal setup—something particularly impressive in our hands-on demonstration.

The Reunion’s Highlights: From Real-Time Demos to Vision Sharing
Hands-On Demonstration: The event kicked off with a brief introduction to KinoSpring’s capabilities and the ease of using our mobile performance volume with the SmartSuit and SmartGloves from Rokoko. The audience was engaged, especially when they saw how quickly we transitioned from wearing the suit to capturing complex movements in real-time. Attendees were particularly interested in the versatility of the setup and how it could capture movements in any environment—whether indoors, outdoors, or in public spaces.
One highlight was seeing a participant test a SmartGlove, gaining firsthand experience with the equipment. Enthusiasts in the room could see the practicality of holding props, like a dummy sword, which added a layer of realism to the demonstration. This hands-on approach to motion capture left the audience excited about how such technology could evolve.
A Vision for a Nomadic Studio: One of KinoSpring’s goals is to become a nomadic studio, capturing motion and stories from anywhere and anytime. Our mobile setup makes it possible to animate characters for films, advertisements, or even live street performances. Attendees were intrigued by the potential to record in daylight or public spaces, which opens up exciting new possibilities for creatives and artists. This idea of KinoSpring as a versatile and adaptable studio was warmly received by the audience, affirming the potential for creative collaboration across different media and locales.

Future Prospects: Building Skills and Engaging with the Broader Community
While motion capture adds a new dimension to animation, it doesn’t eliminate the need for animation skills. Our reunion emphasized the continued importance of learning and mastering these tools, particularly when working with 3D animation. It was clear that although motion capture offers powerful shortcuts, a deep understanding of animation principles is still crucial. With this in mind, we are planning future training sessions for interested collaborators.
Additionally, some attendees suggested expanding our outreach to platforms like TikTok and Instagram to reach broader and younger audiences. This invaluable feedback reinforced the importance of community engagement and finding ways to share KinoSpring’s mission with as many people as possible. A Successful First Encounter—and What Comes Next
The reunion concluded with the promise of follow-up materials, including resources on setting up and using motion capture equipment. These were emailed to participants, along with our plan for 2025, which envisions KinoSpring’s evolution as a creative and internationally mobile studio.
As a first gathering, this event was a modest attempt in engaging our local Le Havre community and sparking enthusiasm around motion capture and animation. Next, we’re planning additional events, including a potential public demonstration in daylight to allow for a broader audience experience. We’re thrilled by the possibilities that lie ahead and eager to continue our journey alongside our community of storytellers, animators, and creatives.
